Small GPS receiver, designed as personal training assistant and bike computer with high-sensitive antenna, large, easy to read gray scale display and USB interface.

As a personal training assistant, the GARMIN Edge 500 records the travelled path (track), distance, time, computes the calories burned and helps to achieve your personal workout goals. The device is very easy to use, supports multiple languages and has an extremely sensitive antenna. It is the perfect partner for any biking activities. The built-in USB interface supports data exchange with a PC.

This device is especially well suited to provide information about your outdoor activities (track, speed, maximum speed, distance, elevation profile, time a.s.o.). The coordinates of the current location are shown on the satellite page. The device also shows the current location on the map in relation to user defined or downloaded routes (so called courses).

Differences between the various Edge models:

All models provide similar functions; these are the main differences:

GARMIN Edge 500

Features:

  • Best suited to be fixed on a bike, robust, very handy
  • Easy to read display with background illumination (128x160 pixels, 4 level gray scale)
  • Multilingual user interface in Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Slovakian, Slovenian, Spanish and Swedish
  • Integrated 12 channel GPS receiver with very sensitive built-in antenna
  • Powered by built-in, rechargeable battery (lasts about 18 h), battery charger included
  • Chest belt with heart rate monitor. The chest belt uses a digitally coded signal, which means, once a heart beat sensor and the GPS have been paired, the GPS will never receive a conflicting signal from another sensor. So you can exercise in close proximity to other sensors without fear of interference. Heart rate monitor either included in the package or available as an option.
  • Short time to first fix (TTFF¹: approx. 15 seconds after a warm start, meaning there are valid coordinates of the satellites available, or approx. 45 seconds after a cold start, meaning there are no valid coordinates of the satellites available)
  • Firmware stored in Flash-Memory, can be updated by the user
  • Operating temperatures -15 .. 60°C (5° .. 140°F)
  • USB interface (connection cable included)
  • Dimensions: 48x69x22 mm (1.9x2.7x0.85 inches)
  • Weight: 57 g (2 ounces)
  • Water resistant up to approx. 3 feet (1 meter) for about 30 minutes (IPX7)

¹) TTFF: Time To First Fix, time until the first information about the local position is acquired.

Information about your training:

  • Personal profile: Stores personal information such as gender, weight and date of birth (in order to calculate the calories burned)
  • Bike profile: Stores the weight of three different bikes.
  • Stop watch with split times (laps). Records split times either manually by pressing the "lap" key or automatically based on a user defined distance or position.
  • Auto pause: Stops the watch automatically if the current speed drops below a user defined value, e.g. when waiting at a red light or during a short break.
  • Speed alert: Goes off when the current speed exceeds a user defined upper limit or when the current speed drops below a user defined lower limit.
  • Distance alert: Goes off after you have travelled a user defined distance. The alert can be set to go off only once or repetitive.
  • Time alert Goes off after a user defined time period. The alert can be set to go off only once or repetitive.
  • Virtual Partner: This unique feature helps you to achieve certain goals for your workout. The goals are based on a previous drive over the same track or on a course downloaded over the Internet. You may adjust the time for your current workout. The virtual partner will keep exactly the speed required to achieve the goal you have set. The Edge 500 will constantly measure your current speed and compares it to the virtual partner's speed. It will ask you to speed up or slow down as needed and it shows on the display whether you are ahead or behind your virtual partner.
  • History: The Edge 500 keeps track of your workouts. It stores the date, time, number of laps, duration, distance, average speed, calories burned, average and maximum heart rate on a daily basis. It also provides weekly overviews and running totals for the duration, distance and calories burned.
  • Stores up to 1'000 laps.
  • Supports metric and U.S. units.
